Welcome to Tissue engineering laboratory!
|
The Laboratory for Tissue Engineering has been established in 1994 by Michael Sittinger. It is a multidisciplinary oriented research group at the Department of Rheumatology, Charité - University Medicine Berlin and is integrated in the Berlin-Brandenburg Center of Regenerative Therapies (BCRT) with focus on translational technologies to transfer novel insights from cell biology and material science into therapeutic procedures and applications.
The mission of our group is to develop core technologies based on multidisciplinary knowledge for cell biology, cell culture and biocompatible delivery materials.
The group is primarily working with cells from mesenchymal tissues and has extensive experience in 3D cell cultures and in the translation of research into therapies. Major focus of our research is the engineering of mesenchymal tissues such as bone and cartilage starting from autologous cells as well as differentiation of mesenchymal stem and precursor cells using a broad panel of cellular and molecular techniques.
Starting with initial experiments in 1991, the in vitro “proof of concept” of our Tissue engineering approach was established by Michael Sittinger in 1992. In the following two years the in vivo evidence of our concept has been provided on the basis of various animal experiments in nude mice. Consequently further small animal studies were performed to investigate the in vivo development and behavior of tissue engineered cartilage and bone constructs in rabbits in consideration of different aspects. By the end of the 1990s we published successful applications of cartilage and bone tissue engineering in rabbits. Also the animal experiments with autologous articular cartilage constructs in horses and Tissue engineered bone constructs in pigs led to promising results in cartilage and bone tissue repair. Thereupon, in 2001 together with clinical and commercial partners we entered into clinical trials with autologous 3D chondrocyte and bone grafts respectively, and in 2003 the “proof of market” could be shown for two new Tissue engineering products named BioSeed®-C and BioSeed®-Oral Bone.
